Dad Dies After Fall on Hawaii Waterfall Hike After Wedding Anniversary

A California man has died after falling near a waterfall while vacationing in Hawaii just days after celebrating his wedding anniversary.

The man, identified by authorities as 66-year-old Mark Debarr of California, “fell off the trail” Friday while hiking near Waipo‘o Falls in Kōkeʻe, according to a news release from the Kaua‘i Police Department.

Crews eventually located the victim “approximately 120 feet below the Waipo‘o Falls.” He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Personnel with the Kaua‘i Police Department, Kaua‘i Fire Department, including firefighters with the Waimea fire station, Air 1, Rescue 3, and the on-duty Battalion Chief, assisted in recovering the victim," police said.

Authorities do not believe Mr. DeBarr’s death is the result of foul play.

"Volunteers with Life’s Bridges, a grief counseling service, and (VASK), a nonprofit that provides emergency needs for visitors, are assisting the victim’s family," they added.

DeBarr was an accounting professional and father of two, The New York Post reported.

He and his wife Maureen celebrated their anniversary on Sept. 18, according to a post on his Facebook page.

DeBarr was “on vacation with his family” when the “tragic accident” occurred in Hawaii, according to a tribute shared on Facebook by Doug Brooker, who said he and DeBarr were best friends for 48 years.

“This will leave a huge hole in the lives of all who knew Mark,” Brooker wrote, noting that his late friend “was an amazing guy and loved by so many.”

“Rest well Mark,” the friend added. “You were one of a kind and will be so missed.”

Multiple California residents have died in Hawaii this year, including at least three people in June, according to SFGATE. Among them is a 77-year-old woman who drowned while snorkeling in a lagoon at Poipu Beach.

A 49-year-old San Jose man also died in June following an incident while snorkeling. He was reportedly on his honeymoon at the time, per SFGATE.

That same month, a 37-year-old Sonoma resident was found unresponsive while swimming at Tunnels Beach during a family trip.
